BBCS Client, Puget Sound Blood Center’s Director of I.T. Featured in February Issue of the AABB News Magazine

The February issue of AABB News featured an insightful piece written by Peggy Dunn, “Leveraging Lean in Information Technology”. Peggy is the Director of Information Technology at the Puget Sound Blood Center, the largest electronic cross-match laboratory in the nation. BBCS has worked closely with Peggy and the Puget Sound Blood Center for more than 15 years. Peggy’s article discusses how the struggling economy has forced companies in all industries to cut expenses and implement new methods to increase efficiency. She focuses on three specific methodologies being used by blood centers around the nation, including their own at Puget Sound. Puget Sound’s innovative ideas and techniques combined with the industry leading solutions from BBCS have allowed them to be a leader in blood manufacturing, drawing over 200 thousand units of blood annually.

Fun In the Sun! BBCS User Group Meeting Heads to Florida for 2010

It’s that time of year again! The 2010 BBCS User Group meeting is just around the corner. This year’s meeting is being held in sunny Jacksonville, FL from June 13-15 and has an exciting schedule of events lined up. Jacksonville is home to The Blood Alliance, a 15+ year client of BBCS who has just recently implemented the Self Registration Questionnaire (SRQ). We are excited to have several speakers from the industry including Dale Malloy (CEO of The Blood Alliance) and Kellie Kerr (Director of Technologies at America’s Blood Centers). Kellie will be discussing and updating the group on current and future ABC initiatives including the new AIM project. Last year’s User Group event hosted over 40 guests and this year we are expecting a similar turnout (over 70% of clients represented). BBCS User Group is an opportunity for us to update our clients on what’s going on with BBCS, discuss relevant industry news, and is a great opportunity for client networking and sharing of ideas. Some of the topics that are slated to be covered are: customer service updates, ICCBA update, a BBCS Primary Application 5.4 overview and discussion around the exciting new Collection Services software. If you haven’t signed up already, don’t waste anymore time. We’d love to see you there!

Selective Testing Is Here!

With the release of the BBCS 5.3.6 Primary Application blood centers can now exclude individual blood test, such as the Chagas test, based on the donor’s history. Our goal by giving the Primary Application the ability to do selective testing is to reduce blood center expenses by allowing them to conduct only the necessary test. Based on the average cost of a single Chagas test this could save your facility $10-20k or more per month. In the past the FDA has required that all donated blood receive the same series of tests available, but now the test for Chagas is the only test that needs to be conducted one time per donor. As of April 1st testing labs will be increasing the cost of a single Chagas test, in some cases almost doubling it. To schedule your demo contact Ken Ottrix at kottrix@bbcsinc.com

Virginia Blood Services Returns to BBCS’ Blood Establishment Computer Software to Support Quality Management Across all VBS Locations

Auburn, WA – Blood Bank Computer Systems, Inc. (BBCS) announced this week that Virginia Blood Services (VBS) has rekindled its prior relationship with BBCS. VBS will immediately begin implementation of the most current releases of the Blood Bank Control System which will enable the organization to utilize automated selective testing as well as a paperless Electronic Donor Records (SRQ).

The new paperless collection process is expected to enhance the donors’ experience while improving blood safety. Virginia Blood Services processes approximately 130,000 donations across Virginia and North Carolina per year in eight drawing locations. The new system will more efficiently manage the registration and collection process with electronic eligibility questions and automated complex follow-up matrices which will electronically flag a donor immediately during the qualification process.

“We at VBS are excited about our return to BBCS. We believe that BBCS is passionate about our organization and is committed to providing us software solutions that will support our mission today and in the future,” said Robert E. Carden Ph. D., VBS’ President and CEO. “We look forward to a long and mutually beneficial relationship.”

VBS will also be launching BBCS’ new Hospital Web Ordering System which will benefit the more than 20 hospitals currently served by the organization. The Hospital Web Ordering System will enable hospital staff to access a secure website to create new product orders and to view the status of previously entered orders in real time using a fully bi-directional interface. Orders will be automatically integrated into the BBCS BECS system for processing and fulfillment.

“The return of Virginia Blood Services validates our customer service values and our vision for BECS”, said Beth Simon, BBCS’ President and CEO. “VBS is an amazing organization and we are honored that they have chosen us and that they recognize our ability to provide them with quality products and excellent service.”
