Featured in February Issue of the AABB News MagazineThe February issue of AABB News featured an insightful piece written by Peggy Dunn, “Leveraging Lean in Information Technology”. Peggy is the Director of Information Technology at the Puget Sound Blood Center, the largest electronic cross-match laboratory in the nation. BBCS has worked closely with Peggy and the Puget Sound Blood Center for more than 15 years. Peggy’s article discusses how the struggling economy has forced companies in all industries to cut expenses and implement new methods to increase efficiency. She focuses on three specific methodologies being used by blood centers around the nation, including their own at Puget Sound. Puget Sound’s innovative ideas and techniques combined with the industry leading solutions from BBCS have allowed them to be a leader in blood manufacturing, drawing over 200 thousand units of blood annually. The 2010 BBCS User Group meeting is just around the corner. This year’s meeting is being held in sunny Jacksonville, FL from June 13-15 and has an exciting schedule of events lined up. Jacksonville is home to The Blood Alliance, a 15+ year client of BBCS who has just recently implemented the Self Registration Questionnaire (SRQ). We are excited to have several speakers from the industry including Dale Malloy (CEO of The Blood Alliance) and Kellie Kerr (Director of Technologies at America’s Blood Centers). Kellie will be discussing and updating the group on current and future ABC initiatives including the new AIM project. Last year’s User Group event hosted over 40 guests and this year we are expecting a similar turnout (over 70% of clients represented). BBCS User Group is an opportunity for us to update our clients on what’s going on with BBCS, discuss relevant industry news, and is a great opportunity for client networking and sharing of ideas. Some of the topics that are slated to be covered are: customer service updates, ICCBA update, a BBCS Primary Application 5.4 overview and discussion around the exciting new Collection Services software. If you haven’t signed up already, don’t waste anymore time. We’d love to see you there! Selective Testing Is Here! With the release of the BBCS 5.3.6 Primary Application blood centers can now exclude individual blood test, such as the Chagas test, based on the donor’s history. Our goal by giving the Primary Application the ability to do selective testing is to reduce blood center expenses by allowing them to conduct only the necessary test. Based on the average cost of a single Chagas test this could save your facility $10-20k or more per month. In the past the FDA has required that all donated blood receive the same series of tests available, but now the test for Chagas is the only test that needs to be conducted one time per donor. As of April 1st testing labs will be increasing the cost of a single Chagas test, in some cases almost doubling it.
